Drawing on one of her recommendation from her EdD research into GenAI professional development for higher education instructors, on designing different levels of micro-PD, she outlines how micro-PD can be shaped to meet user needs at various levels. She also provides eight tips for designing a microlearning PD program.

Microlearning can be applied to a professional development program in several ways by breaking down content into meaningful chunks. This can help the learning feel more manageable and easier for participants to engage in by doing the following:

  • Written online text can be divided into short sections so participants can work through the content in smaller parts.

For her EdD dissertation research, Dr Sheena Bahra designed a PD program grounded in microlearning principles. Each section was intentionally chunked into manageable, engaging content. The pre‑learning task featured a multimedia activity that was completed before the live session, which included:

  • A brief introduction video (under 30 seconds)

  • Interactive, bite‑sized topics about the tool and its features

  • Examples of how the tool supports teaching pedagogy

  • A total completion time of 10–15 minutes

This approach gently introduced GenAI concepts to participants who were new or uncertain about Gen AI, making learning feel accessible and encouraged curiosity on the topic. During the online workshop, microlearning was delivered through breaking the session into 15‑minute topic blocks that included:

  • How to use a Gen AI tool in teaching

  • Teaching strategies for higher-order thinking skills

  • How to implement with examples

  • Action plan in implementing Gen AI in classroom teaching

  • Key takeaways

These short, focused segments helped participants reflect, digest ideas, and generate solutions. Although the workshop lasted 90 minutes, its microlearning design made the experience dynamic, interactive, and easy to follow.

Microlearning activities can be applied just as effectively in face‑to‑face settings as well as in fully online professional development courses. Experiential learning plays a key role in making this approach successful. Experiential learning strengthens microlearning by turning short concepts into meaningful action. Examples include:

  • Hands‑on practice: learners immediately try a skill after a short micro‑lesson.

  • Scenario tasks: quick role‑plays or short scenarios reinforcing the concept.

  • Reflection prompts: learners briefly connect the idea to their own experience.

  • Peer discussion: learners complete a micro‑task and discuss their approach with others.

Designing different levels of micro professional development courses to meet user needs

Drawing on one of the key recommendations from Dr Sheena’s dissertation research, offering micro‑learning PD pathways that participants can choose from that reflects their needs can be highly beneficial to participants and organization. In any PD setting, participants arrive with different levels of readiness, confidence, skills, and prior knowledge. Beginner Micro‑PD Course: this level should introduce the core concept, theory, skill, or tool in a simple, accessible way. The aim is to build a basic understanding representing the lower levels of Bloom’s taxonomy. Content should be short, clear, and play a part in confidence‑building.

Intermediate Micro‑PD Course: this level should move participants into application. Here, they begin practising the concept, theory, skill, or tool through guided activities. The focus is on using the learning in a practical context and strengthening competence.

Advanced Micro‑PD Course: this level should introduce more complex elements of the topic and encourage participants to analyse, create, and evaluate. Learners work more independently, producing artefacts or solutions and reflecting on their outcomes. This aligns with the higher levels of Bloom’s taxonomy.

4. Select learning elements: Choose the types of content that will best support each topic, such as short videos, written explanations, quick activities, or interactive tasks.

5. Choose online tools if applicable: For online delivery, select tools that match the level of interaction you want (e.g., quizzes, breakout rooms, collaborative boards). The tools should support the depth of engagement you expect.
