Robert has spent his career in English language teaching, teacher education, and technology integration. With multiple master’s degrees already under his belt, including one in digital technologies for language teaching. Robert was looking for something that would allow him to build on that strong academic foundation with practical application.

When researching options, Robert quickly realised that what set the Digital Learning Institute apart was the blend of theory and practice.
“For me, the most important part was the fact that it was very, very practical. It was not just theory, as could be the case with some postgraduate courses like MAs or postgraduate diplomas. For me, it was the fact that it was theory and practice at the same time so I could develop a project that was highly practical and relevant to my own context.”

“I'd say that it is a wonderful opportunity to really learn and consolidate lots of the prior knowledge you bring to the course. In my case, I already had a few MAs, but here I was consolidating and revisiting that knowledge with an extra layer of practical incorporation into my own project.”
What surprised him most was the diversity of his peers.
“I thought it was going to be people coming from a language teaching background, but in reality our cohort came from all different sectors. That was really exciting, to see their different points of view.”
The support from tutors and the learning community added real value.
“I felt supported all the way through. The tutors were amazing, my fellow classmates were fantastic, and there was a lot of sharing.”
For his Diploma project, Robert developed a course he plans to market as a solopreneur: IELTS Success, aimed at language teachers and assessment professionals.
“I wanted to make sure that my project was actually bulletproofed through this course. What made a significant difference was that I was able to bring together the ADDIE framework, Bloom's taxonomy, and learner personas to really give life to my project.”
This structured approach gave him clarity and confidence.
“The task itself was exciting, rewarding, and informative. There was a very clear methodology behind it, plenty of examples, and lots of opportunities to put theory into practice.”
The Diploma gave Robert not just tools but a new professional mindset.
“What’s helped me the most professionally is getting into that mindset of the instructional designer. I’m a teacher and teacher trainer, but this course has helped me add an extra layer of professionalism to what I already do. It gives me a lot more confidence, knowing that I’m doing something of high quality and value.”
He now integrates the frameworks into every aspect of his work.
“The ADDIE framework I use now basically every single time I need to prepare something, designing a course, a session, a workshop, even my own YouTube videos. Everything I do now is built and designed around learner personas, and that makes a real difference.”
After completing the Diploma, Robert joined the CPD program to keep building on his learning and stay connected with the community.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity to keep in touch with people, keep in touch with the Digital Learning Institute staff, and above all to have ongoing access to modules and other streams. It’s learning nonstop.”
