From Skeptic to Strategist: Emmanuel’s Journey to AI Literacy

Emmanuel is an e-learning expert with more than 10 years of experience across instructional design, content development, and LMS administration in both banking and higher education. When AI training started appearing everywhere from LinkedIn to YouTube he was curious, but also skeptical and a bit uneasy about what he was seeing.

He wanted more than quick tips or hype. He wanted to truly understand what was “under the hood” of AI, and what it would mean for his work and for learners.

That’s why Emmanuel enrolled in the Applied AI Literacy Certificate.

Why He Chose the Applied AI Literacy Certificate

Emmanuel found that most AI training online fell into two extremes: either highly technical content for developers or very basic “how to use this tool” tutorials.

He wanted something in between.

“On the internet, you either find very technical training or very basic training. I wanted something in between. I wanted to understand the why and what was under the hood.”

What attracted him to the program was its balance between foundations, practical understanding, and ethics. He didn’t just want to know how to prompt AI, he wanted to understand:

  • What AI actually is (and what it isn’t)

  • How it works behind the scenes

  • Where its limits, risks, and biases lie

“The most valuable parts for me were ‘What is AI?’, ‘How AI works’, and the ethics, bias and fairness section. They answered all the questions I had before starting the course.”

Experience During the Course

When Emmanuel saw that the course involved a 3-hour weekly live session, he was initially unsure.

“At the beginning, I was a little bit skeptical because it was 3 hours per week. I was scared that would be too much.”

But the experience turned out to be highly interactive and energizing rather than heavy or overwhelming.

  • Live sessions where learners can ask questions

  • Challenging prompts that invite disagreement and critical thinking

  • Space to talk honestly about fears, risks, and real-world applications

“The course is very interactive. You can ask questions, you will be asked challenging questions, you can disagree. It’s so interesting that it doesn’t feel heavy at all.”

One of the most surprising outcomes was how much the group’s mindset shifted over time.

“Most of us started with a negative or scary impression of AI, and at the end of the course, we finished with a positive image of AI.”

Putting Learning into Practice

After completing the Certificate, Emmanuel began to look at AI and AI training at work through a much more critical and informed lens.

“I’m challenging all the trainings I’m seeing on AI at work. Some are very good, some others are not.”

He now:

  • Evaluates AI initiatives and trainings more rigorously

  • Encourages colleagues to build genuine AI literacy, not just tool skills

  • Uses AI to support his own work, while keeping strong human oversight

“As an e-learning expert, I think I will do less production and more curation. I can perform tasks better and faster, but human intervention will always be needed to check what is done by AI.”

Instead of seeing AI as a threat, Emmanuel now views it as a powerful assistant that can enhance his practice.

“I don’t think we should be scared of AI. I personally see AI as an assistant that helps me perform my job better and faster.”

Impact and Results

For Emmanuel, the biggest outcome has been clarity and confidence.

He now understands:

  • What AI is and how it works

  • Where it can genuinely add value

  • Where its limits and risks are, and how to manage them

This lets him support AI adoption in a way that is thoughtful, ethical, and aligned with good learning design, rather than simply reacting to the latest trend.

“AI is going to have a big impact in our lives not only at work but also in our daily life. So it’s better to understand how, and take control of what we can control.”

Emmanuel is already recommending the course to others in his network and encouraging them to build real AI literacy, not just quick hacks.
