How Laura Demystified AI and Started Using It Confidently in Consulting

Laura’s role has always been that of a learning consultant - supporting people inside and outside organisations to think strategically about learning solutions and performance improvement initiatives.

She enrolled in the Digital Learning Institute’s Professional Certificate in AI Literacy because she wanted to learn how to think critically about AI in the context of her work. Having heard positive feedback from former colleagues and friends who had taken DLI courses in the past, she decided to sign up.

Before starting, Laura felt: “Curious, certainly not confident, [and] a little overwhelmed.”

Why Laura Enrolled in the AI Literacy Certificate

Laura wanted a clearer understanding of AI beyond the noise - especially the fear-driven narratives she kept hearing in professional and social settings.

“There’s so much fear mongering out there… people… have thought that AI is going to accelerate the decline of society… take away all our jobs… robots will take over the world…”

She wanted to approach AI with an open mind and build a solid understanding of what it means for people and organisations.

“I really wanted to… come in with an open mind… to really get a sense of… solid understanding about what it all means for us as people and organisations.”

A Standout Module: Learning With AI

For Laura, the most valuable part of the course was the module on learning with AI - especially the practical ways AI can support learning and knowledge work.

“The module about learning with AI… was most valuable to me.”

She highlights how she learned to use AI for:

  • effective summary activities

  • using AI to act as a tutor to support learning processes

  • better understanding how AI learns and how it interprets what you ask of it

Laura also appreciated the course’s challenge to common assumptions about “prompt engineering.”

“I also realized that prompt engineering is not it… the lecturer made a strong point about how prompt engineering is not the way to engage with AI effectively.”

Applying What She Learned in Real Work

In her day-to-day consulting work, Laura now uses AI to improve and simplify processes she’s been working with for years.

Whether it’s:

  • summarising articles to speed up analysis

  • generating ideas based on contextual information she provides

  • creating rough outlines and prototypes for early-stage concepts

“The certificate has been extremely helpful in opening up my eyes to the variety of ways in which I can use AI in my daily consulting work.”

Ethics, Bias, and Using AI as a Thinking Partner

Laura describes bias and ethics as a consistent focus throughout the course - and something she sees as essential to using AI well.

“One of the things that we focused on… throughout the course was the bias and ethics associated with AI…”

She reflects that AI is shaped by human information (and therefore human bias), while also lacking the “invisible context” people develop through lived experience in organisations.

“That invisible context that comes with being within an organisation for a number of years…”

For Laura, that’s why AI can be useful as a neutral thinking partner (with careful context and judgement):

“It can be really helpful to use AI as a… ‘neutral thinking partner’… and that’s about providing enough context…”

She’s used this approach both individually and with client teams to expand options and make better decisions:

“To help us expand the variety of options… to help us make decisions… the pros, the cons…”

And she’s found it helps her teams move faster with better risk awareness:

“That’s… been a big help in helping us come up with things quicker, better… and with more risk mitigation.”

Why She’d Recommend DLI’s AI Literacy Certificate

Laura is clear that AI is becoming a foundational element in learning and consulting work - and that now is the time to engage with it thoughtfully.

“I think that it’s a no-brainer that AI is going to become more of a… foundational element… It’s worth embracing it now… it’s not going anywhere.”

She would recommend the course to others in L&D and consulting because it helps demystify AI and build critical judgement - not just passive adoption.

“It is a huge help in demystifying AI… understanding what’s underneath the hood… how it is evolving.”

And importantly, she says it helps people see their role in shaping how AI is used:

“Not to see ourselves as passengers… but how to really think about how you want to support the evolution of AI… where to exercise caution… and where to really say… let’s use it in this particular way… And that is so empowering.”

FAQ

Is the Professional Certificate in AI Literacy practical or theory-based?
Practical and grounded. Laura highlights real ways to use AI in day-to-day work - like summarizing, ideation, and prototyping - alongside understanding how AI works “under the hood.”

What topics does the course focus on most?
Laura found the “Learning with AI” module most valuable, covering how AI can support learning (for example, effective summarizing and using AI as a tutor) and how AI learns and responds to prompts.

Can you apply what you learn while studying?
Yes. Laura describes using AI immediately in her consulting work to speed up analysis, generate ideas from context, and create rough outlines in the prototyping phase.

Does the course cover ethics and bias?
Yes. Laura says bias and ethics were a focus throughout, and she describes using AI as a “neutral thinking partner” with careful context and risk awareness.
