With a long career in learning and development, Gail Rowntree has always been passionate about helping people grow. But as the learning landscape shifted, she knew she needed to strengthen her skills in digital design.
“I’ve been in the L&D space for a long time, and I know how to write courses and build curricula but not digitally. I was nervous of it, even a little scared. I made myself go on this course so that I could get over that feeling, stay relevant, and keep up with the new technology and innovation in this space.”

Gail researched several providers but kept coming back to the Digital Learning Institute. Flexibility and electives were the deciding factors.
“It was self-study, which meant I could do it around my job and workload. And they were the only ones that offered electives, so I could tailor the program to my needs. I chose AI and podcasting, but you can also use the other units as CPD afterwards. That made it a very easy choice for me.”
The program gave Gail the freedom to work at her own pace, supported by a structured framework and a community of learners.
“The experience with the course was excellent. You could go at your own pace. There were group sessions where you could talk to other students, see how they were getting on, and realize you weren’t the only one facing challenges. You didn’t feel isolated.”
She describes the tutor support as a standout feature.
“The support from the tutors and staff was excellent. I was unwell during the course, and they were so reassuring and professional. They kept me on track and helped me finish. Their feedback was constructive and quick, and it really made the difference.”
Her favorite part of the program was the final project.
“I could really see where everything was coming together. It all started to make sense, and I could see how I’d be able to use it in my work with clients. That was a brilliant moment.”
She also enjoyed the electives.
“You get to choose the unit that’s most useful to your career, but also the one you’re most interested in. That combination was really motivating.”
Since completing the Diploma, Gail applies what she learned virtually every day.
“I left the job I was in and set out as a consultant. For one of my first clients, I had to create an interactive program for their students from scratch — and I wouldn’t have been able to do that before this course. But I found it quite easy because of what I’d learned through the Digital Learning Institute.”
The practical skills have also had unexpected benefits.
“I used what I learned to adjust my own website. Before, I would have got somebody else to do that, but now I feel able to do it myself. That’s been really useful.”
One skill in particular stood out: storyboarding.
“I wouldn’t have done that before; I would have just dived straight in. But now I can map out the whole thing before building it. It helps me structure the project, see where I need input from subject matter experts, and manage the workload. It’s been the most useful skill by far.”
The impact has been more than technical. Gail says the course gave her the confidence to branch out and define herself differently.
“Now I consider myself a digital learning creator because I’m doing it every day. I’m not sure I would have moved into this space without the course. It’s made me current and given me the confidence to grow in new directions.”
Gail has already recommended the Diploma to friends and colleagues — and many have gone on to complete it themselves.
“It gives you really up-to-date knowledge of how to build digital programs. If you want to explore areas like AI or podcasting, you can do that too. There’s something in there for everyone, and you can tailor the course to your goals and interests. It builds both your skills and your confidence. Everyone can learn something new — and that’s what this course gives you.”
