)
Cliona discovered her passion for digital learning early in her career. Here’s how she turned her first experiences into a thriving role in learning design—and how you can, too.
After graduating from college, I found my calling in digital learning design during a work placement in an HR department. The company was just beginning to integrate eLearning into its business strategy, and I was fortunate to witness the early stages of this transformation. Inspired, I wrote a 13,000-word thesis exploring how eLearning impacts performance and the effects of reduced socialization in training. From that moment, I knew this was the field I wanted to pursue.
Why I Chose the Digital Learning Institute
In my first Learning and Development role, I designed and implemented a new LMS for 450 employees. I also began creating eLearning content using tools like Articulate and PowToon, but I wanted to deepen my skills and understanding of learning design. That’s when I turned to the Digital Learning Institute (DLI) in 2019.
The Associate Certificate in Instructional Design course was exactly what I needed. It combined learning theory with practical application, giving me hands-on experience with tools like Articulate Storyline. The practical elements of the course were a game-changer, allowing me to quickly build confidence and expertise.
Building Skills for Success
DLI’s resources have been invaluable to my journey. The design handbook, storyboard template, and screenplan template became key tools in my workflow and are still resources I rely on today. The knowledgeable and enthusiastic facilitators made the course even more impactful, providing guidance that I carry into my work every day.
Now, in my current role, I’m focused on learning design rather than just content creation, honing my skills to ensure the success of every learning solution I contribute to. Thanks to DLI, I’ve gained the technical and strategic expertise to thrive in this dynamic field.
My Advice for Aspiring Learning Designers
The Associate Certificate in Instructional Design is an excellent starting point for anyone looking to build a career in digital learning design. It’s practical, accredited, and equips you with the tools and resources to make an immediate impact. If you’re ready to start your journey, DLI will give you the foundation you need.
